Studio Medea's Pigne
(Pottery Lamps designed as Pine Cones)
Our pottery, like our pigne and lamps, are produced by craftsmen specialised in the production of maiolica in Caltagirone - a small town located in the southwest area of Catania, Sicily.
The term “maiolica” refers to earthenware painted with tin oxide glazing enamels before firing at a low temperature to reach a reflective, hard finish, a method that originated in Italy during Renaissance.
The manufacturing process that leads to the creation of our ceramic art is divided into six important phases: turning, drying, first firing, glazing, decoration and aging.
For each of these steps, our artisans dedicate the utmost care, in every detail, so that the final product is the result of unique, inimitable and unchanged work overtime.
At Studio Medea, all our ceramic, lamps and pottery barn strictly follow those six steps, in order to give you high-quality Italian ceramic. Our ceramic pine cones, a symbol already found in ancient Egypt, Babylon and Greek tradition as an image of divine and immortality, symbolised life force and eternity along with fecundity and regenerative force.
Sicilian tradition believes that it is useful to give ceramic pine cones as a wish of good health and good luck.
